I’m finally dusting off this blog after…uh…7 years?? I used to get contact form spam like once every few months, enough to be like “hey, the contact form still works!” without being annoying, but now it’s many a day (I blame AI) so it’s dead to me now. So’s the comment form, I almost never got real comments so out it goes. If you need to contact me, social media links and my email are on the about page.

We rented a van and drove a bunch of friends to a house out in the country in New York state for the weekend to celebrate a milestone birthday. Highlights included rental van problems (van no. 1 made a horrible clunking noise at speeds higher than 20mph, so we very carefully drove back and got another, which was also much cleaner), breakfast and campfire with friends, hiking to a waterfall, and Mario Kart.

We visited Chattanooga in August for my cousin’s wedding. We didn’t get to see anyone for long enough, but we did get to spend some time with my Dad’s cousin’s family at the aquarium before the wedding, then saw another cousin’s new house before flying home.

We went out to LA this summer for Zack’s sister’s wedding, and got there a few days early and made a vacation of it. We went to the beach, of course, got to see Zack’s cousins’ new baby, and my parents came down too so we took them to Santa Monica, the Huntington Gardens, and the Warner Brothers studio tour.
There were several large earthquakes while we were there, fortunately far from any big population centers.

Zack's Graduation!!

Zack was officially done a few months ago, but he got to walk in the summer graduation ceremonies. His parents were unable to join us, but his sister made the trip, and it was great to have her there!
There were two days of ceremonies, first the doctoral hooding ceremony in the theater attached to the Carnegie museums (which is very pretty, btw, I’d never been there before), and the second for the whole ECE depart to receive their diplomas.

There were several deaths in my family last year and amongst family friends. One of them was my dad’s brother, Uncle Ron. It was a shock, partly because it followed so closely on the death of my great aunt, and partially because he seemed like the picture of health and he’s only a few years younger than my Dad.
We had a family gathering last year shortly after he died, but the official funeral was about 6 months later in Arlington.

Usually we split Christmas time between my family and Zack’s in both San Jose and LA, but we only made it to LA in December this year because we’d be seeing my family very soon in Washington D.C.
We hung out with Zack’s parents at their house a bunch, and Zack’s sister showed us some of her favorite hangouts around LA, and we also got to drive up to Bakersfield to visit Zack’s great uncle.

We flew out to San Jose for an old friend’s wedding (we’ve known each other since first grade!) The flight was delayed so I didn’t get to go to the rehearsal dinner, but the wedding ceremony and receptions were lovely.
We stayed on a few days to visit with family, who I don’t get to see nearly often enough, and we went hiking on the peninsula with another old friend on a trail neither of us had been on before.

A funeral and a bachelorette party

An old friend who is getting married this year had her bachelorette party in Philadelphia. I was planning to drive there and back from Pittsburgh, but a wrench was thrown in that plan when my great aunt died and the funeral was the day before (thankfully not the same day).
I flew down to Chattanooga from Pittsburgh after work, where Zack was supposed to pick me up, having arrived earlier from Amherst.

We got a call from my cousin that my 95-year-old Great Aunt wasn’t doing very well, so we flew down to visit while we still could. Some of my cousins came by too so we got to see them, too.
We had one good day with her, but the other day she didn’t really know who we were. It hurt to see her like that, she’s been doing so well until just the last few months.

Work sent me and several other coworkers to the annual HIMSS conference, which was in Las Vegas this year. It’s an enormous conference, and it took up the whole convention center.
My team spent most of our time on the showroom floor looking at what other software companies are doing to solve similar problems. I did also go to a few talks, but for the most part they were disappointing, too high-level and vague to be useful.

For Christmas this year we spent a few days in LA with Zack’s family, then went up to see mine in San Jose.
In LA we visited with Zack’s family at their house, toured Universal Studios, which I’d never done before (overpriced, TBH), toured Hollywood with Zack’s sister, and went to the Getty Museum with her and their parents.
In San Jose we got to spend some time with my sister and her kids at my parents’ house for Christmas day.

We gathered with Zack’s extended family for a memorial service for Zack’s grandparents. His grandmother died recently, but I never met his grandfather, who died many years ago. The family rented a sailboat and we all went out on the San Francisco bay to scatter their ashes together.
We arrived several days early and stayed in a very cute hotel in Berkeley and got to meet up with my parents at Jack London Square.

The annual visit to Georgia to visit my great aunt. My parents were able to join us this time, so we saw them too, along with my aunt and my cousin. Lots of cards at the retirement home, Zack and I wandered around the battlefield (the tower was open this time, so we got to go up!), and we went with my parents on the train ride from the Chattanooga train museum.

Christmas with our families. LA first, where Zack’s sister took us to a show and we toured Griffith Observatory (no relation). Then Christmas dinner at my sister’s house and several rounds of board games at my parents’ house.

We went on a belated honeymoon in May to the UK for two weeks. First stop was London, where we stayed with Zack’s sister and her boyfriend. We went on a bus tour there and wandered around the Tower of London, and she took us through her favorite parts of the British Museum; my favorite were the persian lion hunt carvings (they really should return all that looted stuff though). We also went to a small gathering with songs and stories of the Scottish border country.

We needed to drive my car a bit to build up the battery since it had completely died from sitting too long, so Zack and I decided to drive out to see Falling Water. It’s a cool house, but like Kentuck Knob I don’t think I’d want to live there. Pictures are only the outside, since they don’t let you take them inside.
